Don’t Wait to Lose Weight Before Booking Family Photos
“I want to wait until I lose 20 lbs.”
I hear this more than you think.
And I get it — because when it’s my turn in front of the camera, I’ve had the same thoughts. The quiet self-talk that sounds like, “I knew this was coming… why didn’t I do better?” The internal list of reasons we give ourselves for why we don’t yet deserve to be seen.
The idea of waiting to lose weight before photos feels responsible. Practical. Almost protective.
But here’s the truth I’ve learned — both professionally and personally:
Your people don’t love you for a number. They love you.
Photos aren’t about the body you’re working on. They’re about the life you’re living — right now.
And right now matters more than we realize.
Why So Many People Wait to Lose Weight Before Photos
In my years as a photographer, I’ve noticed something important.
People rarely say, “I don’t want photos.”
What they actually say is:
“I’ll do them once I lose some weight.”
“I just don’t feel like myself right now.”
“Maybe later, when things are better.”
Waiting to lose weight before photos is rarely about vanity. It’s about vulnerability.
Being photographed asks us to be seen — fully, honestly, without hiding behind improvement plans or future versions of ourselves.
But waiting doesn’t pause time. It lets it pass.
The Session I Almost Cancelled
I wrote about this back in 2016.
My family photos were booked. I had months to prepare. I wanted — badly — to lose 20 lbs before the session. I tried. I wasn’t there.
I remember standing in that familiar place of self-judgment, thinking I should cancel.
I didn’t.
And I treasure those images now more than I can put into words.
Because they aren’t just photos.
They are my family. That exact moment in time. The conversations we remember. The laughter. The way we were together that day.
They also include Luna — my heart horse — who passed away shortly after. I never saw that coming.
If I had cancelled those photos because I wanted to lose weight first… I don’t even like to think about it.
What Your Family Actually Sees
Here’s something I want you to hear clearly:
Your children will never look at a family photo and say, “I wish Mom had lost weight.”
They’ll think:
I remember how she smiled at me.
I remember how she laughed.
I remember how safe I felt.
Your partner doesn’t love you because of a number. Your friends don’t see you the way you critique yourself. Your legacy will never be measured in pounds.
Photos don’t capture perfection. They capture presence.
Why This Matters More Than You Think
In my work as a legacy and family photographer in Alberta, I’ve seen how quickly “later” disappears.
Kids grow faster than we expect. Animals age. Families change. Life shifts quietly, then suddenly.
Photos don’t stop time — but they give us somewhere to return to.
Most of the images people treasure the most weren’t taken when everything was perfect. They were taken when life was real.
This Season, This Reminder
Especially around seasons like Christmas — when time feels tender — I want to gently say this:
Get in the photos.
With your kids. With your friends. With the people and animals who make up your world.
Make the memories. Cherish the moments.
Don’t let insecurity steal something that love is trying to give you.
This is why my work focuses on creating family photography sessions in Alberta that are rooted in presence, care, and authenticity — not perfection. It’s also why my legacy photography sessions exist: to preserve the moments that matter most, especially when time feels fragile.
What I Want You to Remember
Be present. Be in the moment. Be in the picture.
Your family sees you — clearly, lovingly, fully. They see beauty, grace, and goodness.
