Katelyn and Damon Elopement

I hosted a wedding in my backyard near Camrose, Alberta last fall. Katelyn and Damon hired me a year prior to photograph their wedding. Initially, the couple planned a large wedding with a full guest list, big venue, the cake, the decorations, the party. As time passed, they realized that what mattered was them, their love and commitment to each other. Katelyn and Damon decided to forgo the big event and focus on an intimate ceremony with their families.

We met for dinner two weeks before the wedding. The conversation really resonated with me. Katelyn looked at me, so much emotion in her eyes and said quietly, “I just want to be married, I’m not a big wedding kind of girl. We want to celebrate our marriage with our family and have something small and intimate.” We discussed park locations and tried to find an area that was lovely and quiet, while being cost effective. Katelyn, ever thoughtful, didn’t want to disturb others with their nuptials.

When I got home, I realized I had the perfect, quiet and intimate wedding location. I sent Damon and Katelyn a message with photos of my acreage back yard and offered to host their wedding here. The couple gratefully accepted.

To ensure that the day was perfect, I made sure we had bubbly, a small cake and hors d’oeuvres. Katelyn got ready inside my house while the couple’s families enjoyed the coffee and snacks that I provided.

When it was time to start the ceremony, we realized that the couple didn’t have a way to play the bridal march song. I scrambled to hook up a Bluetooth speaker to Katelyn’s phone so she could walk in to her marriage ceremony with her wedding song playing.

As Katelyn and Damon were about to say their vows, it started to snow, like a blessing.
I’m not sure it could have been more perfect.

We first met Carla at a wedding we were both in years ago. I loved how friendly she was. We knew we needed her for our wedding. Over the course of planning it, it went from a large hall wedding with all of our family and friends, to an intimate ceremony with just our closest loved ones. When we met with her just weeks before the big day, we still didn’t have a location locked down. Carla very quickly offered us her backyard! We were shocked, but also so excited to be able to have a quiet, beautiful spot to say “I do”. Carla was so accommodating with our families, and made the small event so, so special! It felt like I was sharing our biggest moment with a close friend. I’ll definitely be turning to Carla in the future for any special photos we need! She’s so wonderful 🥰
