Huge thanks to Valerie at The Wheelbarrow Florist for her guest blog! Amazing new floral trends on the horizon!
We all know it; we’ve all seen it, the wrist corsage and boutonniere with roses and baby’s breath, billows of sparkly ribbon and some bling or feathers. It’s what everyone has been ordering for grad for years. Now don’t get me wrong they can be beautiful in their own way, but honestly isn’t it time for something different, something a little more modern and edgy?
Graduation is probably the first time young ladies and gentlemen will purchase their own body or personal flowers and the first time they will deal with a florist. The doe eyed look when they come into the shop to inquire is quite endearing which quickly turns to a look of fear when we present them with a bunch of questions and a ton of options. What colour, what style, how much is your budget. The Grad flower world can be a little overwhelming to some who just wants to look pretty for grad.
But wait! What if we approached body flowers like fashion, what if we think of the flowers as a piece of jewelry or a fashion accessory. Then the ideas and concepts can vastly change and adapt to the style of the dress, and personality of the person wearing it. It’s easier to talk about a bracelet than it is a wrist corsage – corsage is just a really odd word.
There are several new trends for personal body flowers. Here are just a few.
Floral Jewelry: Necklace, Earrings, and rings that are designed to be worn, just like the real thing.
Body Tattoos: Flowers designed and attached to the body the morning of the event. They are attached to a special adhesive strip that can move with the body. No itchy ill-fitting wristbands, chains, bands or wire needed. Arm, wrist, ankle, across or down the back, temple or neck, there are so many possibilities.

Boutonnieres: Now guys don’t think that we have forgotten about you. Florists are now creating pocket flowers and flat backed boutonnieres that resemble little pieces of art and a good florist can incorporate in personal touches such as guitar picks, game pieces or other small embellishments that might have a personal meaning to the one wearing it.
Now these types of floral trends are not for everyone. There are some limitations.
Price: Because many of these are custom pieces of floral art that require more work in creating the design than a cookie cutter wrist corsage, the price is going to be more. Keep in mind that these are custom so no one else will have anything similar, they will reflect your personality and are often designed to compliment and enhance the dress or suit. The best things to do is talk to your local florist and see if they are creating these designs, ask about their pricing and see if they are able to so something for you that is respectful of your budget.
Timeline. The jewelry can be made a day or two a head of time but the tattoos are built right on the body the morning of the event so timing it between hair appointments and limo rides for pictures may be an issue.
