Being stuck inside all day can be difficult, particularly with little ones. If you are looking for something fun and interesting to do that is fairly easy and fun for the kids, try making winter bubbles! It’s fun to do some unique art photography that isn’t possible to do any other time of year.
Simple items already in your home
Water, dish soap, corn syrup and a straw, easy peasey!
A reusable plastic straw is great, that’s what I used to create the bubbles.
How to get started:
Dress warm! If you are outdoors and it’s really cold, you may want to double up socks or add hot packs to your boots.
Set up an area in nice light so that you can photograph your bubble.
Ensure the area is relatively clear of clutter around it or behind it so that the focus of your photo is on your bubble.
Don’t use a metal straw!!!
Dip the straw in the bubble solution, you may have to experiment with adding a bit more water or corn syrup.
Don’t draw the solution too far up the straw or you’ll get a mouthful. I can tell you from experience, it does not taste very good. π
Gently blow through the straw close to the spot you are going to place it. Unlike summer bubbles, you can’t blow them up into the air, rather try to blow them into place on a surface.
It takes practice and patience, keep trying!
Once you’ve blown your bubble, watch the patterns form.
Try using a time lapse setting on your phone, or a longer shutter exposure on your camera.
Experiment with angles with your photo, shoot straight on, from above, or lower than the bubble. There are several options to create some really unique art photography pieces.
Ice crystals forming on the newly formed bubble.
The same bubble, now fully frozenA different angle on the same bubble, photographing into the sunset.
Ready to try it? Recipe is below, I’d love to see your images, be sure to comment below, or on my Facebook page here.
What you’ll need:
1.5 cups water
1/2 cup dishwashing liquid – regular blue dawn, not concentrated
1/4 cup corn syrup (I added a bit more)
Gently stir and blow a couple of test bubbles. Add more water if needed.
That’s it, you’re set – get blowing bubbles and have fun!

This is such a fun idea for not just photographers, but anyone looking for a fun winter activity!! Also, I grew up in Wisconsin, freezing cold winters, tons of layers and coats and socks and boots, padded until you can’t move. And yet we NEVER thought to use heat packs! That’s genius!!
WOW! What a fun snow day activity! That is so neat and the images are beautiful.
Thank you Brandi, it’s a ton of fun!
What a fun set of ideas for moms with children to entertain on a cold winter day! Amazing photographic images with simple household infredients!
That’s the best thing – I could dig it all out of the cupboard, the hardest thing to find was a straw, as we have so many metal ones now!

I’m seriously always looking for cold hacks. This past week was -45C, when checking my horses, I wore ski goggles to keep my eyeballs from freezing!!
This is so amazing! What an awesome idea to do with your kids on a snow day!
It is so much fun – be sure to try it!! You’ll be as excited as the littles π
What a super fun science experiment! I hope we get enough snow for my kids to try this!
It is great fun Ashleigh! I feel like a kid myself when watching the bubbles start to freeze, it’s exciting!
So cool. Love the instructions and need to try this as a creative session soon!
